The Harmony of the Spheres — Projection Mapping Installation

Audiovisual / Digital Art & Installation
Description
The Harmony of the Spheres is an informative Projection Mapping Installation and digital art experience that explores the ancient Pythagorean theory of cosmic music. Blending real-time projections on custom physical structures with soundscapes derived from real astronomical data, the project bridges contemporary science, ancient philosophy, and digital art. The project was nominated for the 2025 Premios Huella in the Digital Entertainment category at Universidad de Medellín.
Research & Conceptual Foundation
The project originated from in-depth research into the ALMA Space Observatory, which captures electromagnetic waves emitted by distant celestial bodies and translates them into audible sound frequencies. Using these raw astronomical radio frequencies as a primary sonic foundation, our team composed a narrative soundscape designed to connect rational scientific observation with artistic expression.
The concept revolves around the Theory of the Spheres—a historical worldview where celestial bodies were believed to rotate within vast crystalline spheres, generating a continuous, harmonized cosmic melody. The primary goal of the installation was to translate this conceptual bridge between calculation and inspiration into a multi-sensory physical experience for visitors.
“If the theory of the spheres is the rational skeleton, the harmony of the spheres is the aesthetic soul. Deep down, we are still searching for that universal harmony dreamed of thousands of years ago.”
Projection Mapping Installation & Technical Setup
To bring this narrative onto a physical, spatial plane, we designed a custom spatial art installation featuring videomapping mapped directly onto geometric white cube structures.
My role spanned across all stages of production:
-
Visual Mapping & Real-Time Projection: Using Resolume Arena, I edited visual assets and mapped audio-reactive projections onto physical cube setups in real time. The visuals were crafted to simulate deep-space environments and celestial movements that dynamically responded to the audio spectrum. The live installation was operated using dual 5,000-lumen projectors calibrated for precise geometric alignment.
-
Audio Production & Sound Design: The narrative voiceover was recorded in a professional radio booth and mixed alongside the ALMA Observatory soundscapes. Using Adobe Audition and Cakewalk, we engineered and polished the final surround-sound composition, creating a deep, atmospheric audio experience.
